A New York Times bestseller

From the author of the New York Times bestselling Love & Gelato comes a heartwarming tale of a road trip through Ireland filled with love, adventure, and the true meaning behind the word family.

Addie is visiting Ireland for her aunt’s over-the-top destination wedding, and hoping she can stop thinking about the one horrible thing she did that left her miserable and heartbroken—and threatens her future. But her brother, Ian, isn’t about to let her forget, and his constant needling leads to arguments and even a fistfight between the two once inseparable siblings. Miserable, Addie can’t wait to visit her friend in Italy and leave her brother—and her problems—behind.

So when Addie discovers an unusual guidebook, Ireland for the Heartbroken, hidden in the dusty shelves of the hotel library, she’s able to finally escape her anxious mind and Ian’s criticism.

And then their travel plans change. Suddenly Addie finds herself on a whirlwind tour of the Emerald Isle, trapped in the world’s smallest vehicle with Ian and his admittedly cute, Irish-accented friend Rowan. As the trio journeys over breathtaking green hills, past countless castles, and through a number of fairy-tale forests, Addie hopes her guidebook will heal not only her broken heart, but also her shattered relationship with her brother.

That is if they don’t get completely lost along the way.

Review

A heartwarming contemporary companion novel to Welch’s Love & Gelato. Sixteen-year-old Addie Bennett takes a summer road trip through Ireland with her brother Ian and gains insight on how to heal the pieces of her shattered heart. Readers will cheer that Addie’s best friend, Lina from the previous book, makes an appearance, but this is Addie’s story. Their friendship is tested when a planned trip to visit Lina in Italy is sidetracked, thanks to her brother Ian and a dimpled-faced driver named Rowan. They take an unexpected road trip to the biggest music festival in the country. Through the winding roads and lush greenery of Dublin, Addie reminisces about her romance with Cubby, Ian’s football teammate, and although Ian disapproves of the relationship, he is the only one who knows what Addie is going through. While offering the advice of a travel guide, each chapter is like a reassuring hug in the icy climate. The teens travel through Ireland in a cramped car with a leaking roof, and the trio meets a selection of colorful characters that unknowingly help Addie get through a lost love and increase her respect for her brother—they learn about one another more than they could imagine. Fans of Love & Gelato will enjoy this as Welch takes on love, laughs, friendship, and the Electric Picnic Festival in a trip through the scenic green hills of Ireland. VERDICT Purchase for all teen romance shelves.–Annisha Jeffries, Cleveland Public Library -- SLJ Online ― May 25, 2018

The Cliffs of Moher

Every time a traveler goes to Ireland and doesn’t stop at the Cliffs of Moher, a banshee loses her voice. That’s right, sweet pea, a banshee. We are in Ireland after all. Shrieky ghosts abound. And as your tour guide and now friend, I’m required to tell you that one simply does not go to Ireland and not see the cliffs. They’re nonnegotiable. Required reading. They are the entire point.

Here’s why. The cliffs are gorgeous. Breath-stealing, really. But not in the soft, endearing way of a sunset or a wobbly new lamb. They’re gorgeous like a storm is gorgeous—one of those raw, tempestuous ones that leave you feeling awed and scared at the same time. Ever been trapped in a car during a particularly brutal thunderstorm? The cliffs are that kind of beautiful. Think drama, rage, and peace all packed up into one stunning package.

I studied the cliffs for years before I figured out their secret—the thing that takes them from merely scenic to life-altering: they’re beautiful because they contradict themselves. Soft, mossy hills turn to petrifying cliffs. A roiling sea rages against a serene sky. Visitors stand around in a combined state of reverence and exuberance. Before the cliffs I knew that beauty could be delightful and inspiring. After the cliffs I knew that it could also be stark and miserable.

In fact, the cliffs are an awful lot like a certain heart I know. You know, the one that has managed to contain both splintering joy and shattering sorrow and still remain exquisitely beautiful?

Not that anyone asked me.

HEARTACHE HOMEWORK: Let’s unleash a little rage, shall we, pet? I want you to find something to throw. A rock? An annoying pigeon? Now name it. Give it the identity of the thing that is bothering you the most about this situation, and then let it fly. Sometimes a little rage is good for the system. After that, I want you to take a deep breath. And then another. Notice how the breaths just keep coming? Notice how they just take care of themselves?

Last summer I picked up a book called Love & Gelato expecting a cute, summery read, as fluffy as cotton candy. To my surprise, not only was that book all those things, but it was packed with so much meaning! I was amazed by how much I loved it and quickly determined that anything Jenna Evans Welch writes has to be on my shelves!

And then, how lucky was I when I heard there was a companion novel coming out soon?! I, of course, bought it and finally got around to reading it this week! OH MY GOODNESS!! What a beautiful piece of art! I adored Love & Gelato, but I think I might like this new one even more! While Love & Gelato focuses on romance, at the root of Love & Luck is family, which I loved even more than I thought I would!

What makes this book sparkle is how realistic the characters are. Addie is one of four kids, having three brothers, and I just loved reading about their relationships! They fought with one another, of course, but at the end of the day, they had each other''s backs. I love a good story of siblings! :) Addie is a teenager trying to figure out the rollercoaster ride that is high school and all the hills and valleys that come along with it. As a high-schooler myself, I can attest to the fact that the problems she faces are very real today. The cause for her heartbreak is something that happens far too often at school, and it was nice to read about something that actually happens inside the walls of high school.

As I mentioned earlier, romance is not the main focus of this book. And that was totally okay! I''m a sucker for a swoon-worthy romance, but it just wasn''t needed in this book. There was a little sprinkle of romance towards the end, but it was just the right amount! The family aspect of this book far outshines the need for romance!

For being a contemporary book, the plot moved at the perfect speed! Not too slow, not too fast! You start out not knowing the cause for Addie''s broken heart, but as the story progresses you slowly fit the puzzle pieces together! It kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what had happened! I also loved how they made stops all throughout Ireland to mend Addie''s broken heart. I would recommend listening to some of it on audiobook because the "Guidebook Lady''s" attitude was hilarious!

By the end of this book, my soul just felt cleansed, if that makes any sense at all? It was refreshing to read and just the perfect spirit-lifter! If you''re looking for a cute, summery read but also a book with depth beyond just romance, this is the book for you! I give it all the stars!!!

After reading “Love and Gelato” I wanted to read anything by this author. So I search what else she had written only to find I had to wait one entire year...pure torture! To say I was excited to read this book is the understatement of the century! When I finally got it I was excited to start! The book was good! Not as good as love and gelato, but if you read the first book them you should definitely read this! The storie line was very interesting, and I found my self laughing at times at the scene that was taking place. This is just a good feeling book! When you finish reading you just feel good! The author did such a good job portraying what the character was going thew! The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because I liked the first better. But if you are looking for a book that will take you on a journey to find who a person really is, then I would suggest this book! And don’t worry, there is a romance in here.

What makes a book “supremely enjoyable” to read, as opposed to “spellbinding,” “rich,” or “charming?” For me, it has to be a mix of good writing, clever lines, fun characters, strong relationship building, and most importantly, heart. Jenna Evans Welch’s latest book Love and Luck is such a supremely enjoyable read because it has all of those things. To wit:

Good Writing
It takes a very steady writer’s hand to dole out details of a relationship, world, or situation fast enough to keep the interest of readers with short attention spans but not so fast that a story becomes predictable one-third of the way in. At the core of Love and Luck is the relationship between the main character, Addie, and her brother Ian, right after she goes through a really rough break-up with her boyfriend, and during a family trip to the Emerald Isle. They’re there for her aunt’s destination wedding, but Ian keeps bringing up the break-up, which gets him into all kinds of trouble with Addie. Then, she’s more-or-less forced into a whirlwind road trip with him and his Irish buddy Rowan. Addie finds a guidebook entitled “Ireland for the Heartbroken: An Unconventional Guide to the Emerald Isle” at their hotel, and uses that as her survival mechanism, but finds that she doesn’t need to rely on it so much as she needs to learn how to trust Ian, own her mistakes, and rely on her friends and family. Welch peels back the layers of Addie and Ian’s relationship bit-by-bit, through revelations of details about her relationship with Cubby, then wraps it back up again using the chaotic stitchwork of their shared roadtrip experience and previous history. It’s endearing and heart-warming, that’s what it is.

Clever Lines
Some examples:

(in a conversation with Ian and Addie’s older brother, Walt, and their mother):

Walt leaned forward, shaking himself free of me also. “Mom, please stop swearing. You’re awful at it.”

“You can’t be awful at swearing,” she said shakily.

“You have single-handedly disproven that theory,” Walt argued. “There’s a science to it; some words go together. You can’t just throw them all out at once.”

“I’m going to throw you all out at once,” Mom said.”
r this:

(as Addie’s getting into Rowan’s tiny car and beginning this forced road trip):

I rushed over, eager to keep up the goodwill, but when I looked inside [the car], the glow that Ian’s smile had created instantly faded away. He had somehow managed to stack Rowan’s items into a teetering pile that almost touched the ceiling. The only actual space was behind Ian’s seat, and it was just the right size for three malnourished squirrels and a hedgehog. If they all sucked in.

Fun Characters

Addie is a high-schooler in the swamp of murky self-identity, yet her narrative isn’t angsty or depressing. In fact, it’s anything but. Through her interactions with Rowan, who becomes a co-commiserator in the Land of Heartbreak, she is revealed (to herself and others) as a kind, impulsive, dedicated, angry, helpful Person. Through her interactions with her brother Ian, which could have shown her to be nothing but selfish and mean-spirited, she is shown to crave harmony. In the end, her biggest problem is her ability to own her past mistakes, which is a very relatable character flaw. Somewhat whimsically, she follows the advise of the writer of “Ireland for the Heartbroken,” making paper airplanes out of losses and standing in the waters of Inch Beach until her legs are numb. It’s a joy to follow her journey.

Strong Relationship Building
All books, when it comes right down to it, are about relationships (all good books anyway), no matter the genre. To take a relationship–a sibling relationship no less–from a knock-down fist fight to a hug, realistically, is no small feat, but as I said before, it’s done in this book.

Heart
“What is heart?” you say. It’s that indefinable quality of (good writing + fun characters + strong relationship building) + emotion. The emotion has to be deep and woven throughout, not dramatically expressed in fits and spurts like a bas relief sculpture, just for show. It’s interesting to me that at the launch for this book, which I attended at Kings’ English in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jenna stated that this book came out of one of the toughest years of her life. It doesn’t feel like it; it’s too light-hearted for that. Or rather, maybe because of that, between the clever quips and mad dashes, the heart of this book reaches a very universal core: who we are as human beings and whether we’re sufficient by ourselves or need others.

Who Would Like Love & Luck?
If you liked Love and Gelato, it’s loosely-related predecessor which I reviewed at HeadOverBooks.com, you’ll like this book. If you’re going to the beach and want a light read, you’ll like this book, although there’s not much romance per se. If you want a book for your teenage girl to read, one that has no sex and very little language, you’ll like this book.

I purchased this book from Amazon to read. All opinions are my own. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Love and Luck by Jenna Evans Welch. In the book Love and Gelato we followed Lina to Italy and fell in love with Ren and Gelato. In Love and Luck we follow Lina''s friend Addie to Ireland with her family on a family trip for her Aunt''s wedding. After the wedding Addie and her brother, Ian are taking a trip to Italy to visit Lina and Ren. Only Ian has other plans and Addie must hold onto her secrets and her brother to get through the summer. But sometimes with a little bit of luck a plan that wasn''t what you thought turns out to be the trip you needed. So Addie and their new friend Rowan follow this little guidebook of Ireland while Ian follows his own path that lead to a concert where everything falls apart or comes together, it doesn''t really matter it was in Ireland.

I read "Love & Gelato" last year and really enjoyed it! "Love & Luck" was no different for me. If you''re looking for a fun, quick read, look no further!

I really enjoyed how this story went back and forth between passages from the guidebook that Addie discovered, and the adventures that Addie, her brother Ian, and Ian''s friend Rowan are having. This book grabbed my attention right from the start and held it all the way through the story.

At the beginning of the book you find out that Addie and her brother, Ian are not getting along - to put it mildly. The once close siblings have a wedge in their relationship; one that is only hinted at for a long portion of the book. All you know if that Addie has had her heart broken by a boy who is on Ian''s football team, and that has something to do with their feud. The suspense of not knowing the details until later in the book helped keep that tension going.

If you have siblings, you can relate to Addie and her older brothers. The love/hate relationship, how certain siblings are closer than others, and just each sibling''s quirks. They were all really endearing. I really loved seeing Addie and Ian''s family; their mom and 2 older brothers are great!

Addie is looking forward to going to Italy to visit her friend, Lina (who is the main character in Love & Gelato), and opening up to her friend about all her heartache. When that trip gets derailed, Addie is thrown together with her feuding brother, Ian, and Ian''s Irish friend, Rowan. Tensions rise, emotions flair, but the 3 of them go on a journey that also opens their eyes. They see beautiful locations in Ireland, and also discover there are more to each other than first meets the eye.

This is a story about recovering from heartache, about healing riffs between siblings, new friendships, old friendships, discovery yourself, not letting people''s view of you shape who you truly are, taking time to enjoy the beauty around you, and the loyalty of family and friends. Just to name a few things.

I would buy the guide book used by Addie because it was hilarious, believable, and the homework worked with the story. The fact that they follow the map and grow as individuals and friends just brings you in and makes you part of the story. I cried, I laughed, and in the end I felt resolved. The ending didn''t leave you hanging or try to do a fix all. Instead it was very believable.

She is pushing everyone away until serendipity happens and she ends up on an impulsive tour of the emerald isle. There she learns about healing, living, loving, and a little bit of luck. She learns who truly has her back and that she is indeed stronger than she could have imagined. I loved the real-life lessons that didn''t magically disappear but had to be faced. I fell in love with Addie because I got to know her so well reading the book. Great character development, and fantastic read! I might just go read it again;).

I bought this book because I loved Jen’s other book Love & Gelato and this was the companion novel. I went into it thinking it was a romance just like Love and Gelato was. But how I was wrong. I didn’t love this book to begin with, but the more I read , the more I began to love it. The plot did have underlying romance in it which made it so sweet to read. But it didn’t over take what the real purpose and meaning of the book was. It was about family, bonds that you have with friends and loving yourself. It made the book unforgettable. I recommend to readers who look for depth in a book but still quite fun and fluffy.
